Recipe Ingredients

Avocado: Chose ripe avocado for that smooth velvety texture. Fresh and frozen can be used. Banana: Use a fresh banana that is slightly ripe yet firm since they are high in antioxidants and naturally sweeter too. Bananas help to make this smoothie really creamy and add a natural sweetness. Fresh and frozen can be used. Milk: I use whole milk for a really creamy smoothie but you can use any milk of choice like almond milk, soy, oat, or even yogurt instead of milk.  Optional add-ins: These are optional and nice to add (if you have) as they give an additional nutritional boost. I’ve used chia seeds and milled flax seeds. Hemp seeds, collagen powder, or protein powders can also be added too!  Sweetener: This is optional and can be adjusted to taste. I prefer using Medjool dates for sweetening my smoothies. Honey, maple syrup, or sugar can be used too, or simply skip. Adjust sweetness to your taste. Toppings: I’ve used Chopped pistachios, you can use nuts of choice

Variations

Chocolate Avocado smoothie - add 1-2 tablespoons of cacao powder or cocoa powder Avocado banana peanut butter smoothie - add 1-2 tablespoons of peanut butter or nut butter of choice Blueberry banana avocado smoothie - add 1-2 cups of fresh or frozen blueberries or replace with the fruit of choice  Avocado banana green smoothie - add 1 handful of greens of choice like spinach, kale.

Recipe Tips

Meal prep: Peel the banana, avocado and store them in a freezer-safe ziplock and freeze until ready to use. All you need to do is grab a bag, dump it with milk and sweetener and blend!! Use ripe fruit. Ripe bananas provide natural sweetness to the smoothie and are a great way to reduce the amount of sugar. In addition, ripe avocado and bananas make the smoothie even creamier.  Add Greens: It’s a great way to add greens to your diet as you barely taste them in a smoothie. Just add a handful of washed kale or spinach. Amp up the protein - either add your favorite protein powder or go the natural way and add nut butter (almond butter, cashew butter, or peanut butter) or greek yogurt. Amount of liquid: may vary depending on the type of blender. High-powered blenders blend much better, so if you have a regular or personal-size blender, you may need to add more milk/liquid. I’ve used my Vitamix. Consistency: If your smoothie seems too thick, add in a bit of extra milk.  If it seems too thin, add more bananas.   Discoloration: This smoothie is best served fresh!! Both avocados and bananas tend to turn black when exposed to air, (oxidize). So try to serve the smoothie as soon as it’s ready.
